I tried to set my colonist's age to make him an adult. Children, school and learning doesn't seem to quite understand how age works.

My entire colony just committed suicide by ancient danger

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:45 AM PDT

So I, the great fool I am, decided to do an ice sheet colony today even though I have a hard time running a four person colony with a 365 day growing season.

Things were going well at first, managed to get some windmills set up, made a warm little base in a mountain and got a small store of food to tide everyone over for a it.

Then a caravan passed through and their boomalope ate my limited food stock.

    Yay.

The colony quickly started to starve and ended up eating the dog, the lynx that killed the dog, and the occasional pawn that Randy in his wisdom and mercy dropped on the map.

But that wasn't enough, so one by one, each entered a starvation-induced daze and wandered straight into the ancient danger so the bugs could kill them cause that was honestly a kinder death than slowly starving in what was basically a glorified cave.

    10/10 my best colony yet.

Edit: A new caravan just rolled in with four bears and made quick work of the colony. Turns out I had one colonist who had simply collapsed due to starvation and now she's collecting and butchering her friends and the bugs.

The colony lives to die another day!

Edit 2: The sole survivor had a mental break and set all the work benches in the colony on fire.

Edit 3: Lost my final colonist depserately hunting thrumbos

What is your most depraved Rimworld story?

I started up my reactor to my ship, and 12 days into the raids, this stupid moron had a tantrum and destroyed my AI Core. The 15 days of raids continued, and then said it was ready, but I can't take off. How do I get another AI Core?

Shower thought: Killing a colonist's family might be something best done during times of happiness, so it doesn't happen by mistake during times of hardship.

    Tips for a first timer?

Hey guys. I've just got Rimworld today, and I'm going to have my first gaming session with it later today. I've been playing some management games before, the latest being Oxygen Not Included. I usually watch a sh*tton of youtube videos to learn the best practices before even attempting a new management game. The frustration of totally not noticing something important until it's too late just triggers me. In ONI I had a 4-6 hrs save, when my crops stopped growing. Then I relized that temperature was a thing, and had to start over. Something similar happened in Prison Architect.

On one side, I really dont want to play hours just to realize that I'm a total idiot, but on the other I kind of wish I never watched all those best practice videos. This is because of the satisfaction of figuring something out myself ingame, instead of copying some dudes super efficient method.

So I guess this post is me asking: What do I NEED to know, when getting started with Rimworld?

Off topic: This game looks cool as heck, and with a loooot of customizations. Is it still receiving updates, or are there a bunch of DLCs/mods that I should look into?
