So I spent over 20 hours on this colony...

    Posted: 10 Nov 2019 05:50 AM PST

Everything was working out perfectly, my colony had grown to 6 members, I had a stable electricity system, finally managed to beat starvation by having a stable farm. Summer was finally coming after I had struggled through the winter with low food.

Then Cassandra storytelling A.I decided to kick me in the balls after giving me a long, lovely moment in Rimworld. Three raiders attacked me, they had grenade launchers and machine guns. Simultaneously, my entire storage got set in fire by boomalopes that the raiders had killed, over 2000 leather, all of my production stations. Two of my people died in the raid.

After all this, I was like okay, okay, I will survive this, I will survive. So I had three people left, and one of them able to still be standing (Sammy). Also, the game decided to throw me a curveball, I got a free new colonist because the game saw how badly it destroyed me. My bedresting colonists were getting fed, they were healing, but then Sammy went feral, killed the new colonist I got, ate him. After that, my two bedresting colonists just kept laying in their beds (despite not having any injuries that could prevent their movement.) and died of starvation. Well, there wen't all that time, this feels shit.

Edit: A refugee chased to my colony after this came, and I managed to beat the 1 raider chasing him, but then before that guy got to really do anything, another raid happened and the raider knocked my new colonist out with a knife and kidnapped him...

My colony at the time of it's death.

I keep finding out new things about this game all of the time. I wanted to share a few things that come to mind.

(Some of this information may have been shared previously, or is documented in the wiki.

This information is valid for the "Vanilla" unmodded RimWorld experience!)

This is a lot of info, so please forgive the post length.

    Did you know:

    • Lightning strikes never seem to directly kill living things that are at full health? Instead they are more likely to "burn" a pawn or animal on a certain part of their body, requiring medical treatment.
    • (Previously shared) Thrumbos will eat trees? They are in fact animals that prefer eating large plantlife in particular, especially including trees. Remember this if you leave Thrumbos in an allowed area with vital tree patches!
    • The "X" and checkmark boxes can be dragged across a menu to change settings? By this, I mean that if you click and drag a checkmark across a pawn's "forbidden" menu status (jobs, etc.) you can unforbid them and allow large numbers of pawns to do those activities? And vice versa.
    • You can build multiple mortars to destroy a dangerous ship part? Just set all of your mortars to force-fire on the ship part, sit back, and be prepared to fight the mechanoids who might try to stop you!
    • (Previously shared) You can create a giant wall around most of your base, but leave a large and defended opening for raiders? Most raiders will not directly tunnel through your walls. They will often seek a more direct path to your inner base, which can be heavily guarded!
    • (Previously shared) Tynan is in the game? It's true! He's even specially labeled as a "game developer" as confirmation!
    • Multiple layers of a wall almost completely discourage raiders from tunneling your base? Unless raiders are using explosives, they much prefer going through thin layers of walls lacking serious reinforcement. More than two or so layers of 'strong' and fire-resistant wall will cause them to seek out a better vantage point!
    • Prisoners will steal weapons during a prison break? This can be extremely dangerous for your pawns. NEVER leave stockpiles or shelves with weapons near your prisons unless you are prepared for escaped prisoners to use your own arms against you!
    • EMPs will never "destroy" mechanoids, only stun them? In real life, EMPs have properties that can permanently shut down electronics for good. For balance purposes, this doesn't seem to be the case in RimWorld!
    • Orbital bombardments can completely decimate a settlement? If targeted at the nearest central point of a settlement by a careful pawn, the energy and damage from a single bombardment strike can often be enough to completely clear the area of enemies (or friendlies? If you're that kind of monster!)

That's all I can think of at the moment. I would love people to share more information about the game that they feel new and even very experienced players could benefit from in this thread.

Hope you learned something you didn't know before!
