    I just used one to fend off a decently-sized infestation I got from a 3-star quest on merciless difficulty without any of my colonist getting hurt, I had my incapable of violence pawn repair it constantly (make sure you set it to ignore danger, not flee), 2 animals to melee block with it (and a melee colonist and a 3rd animal as a backup but they didn't end up being used), and the rest of the pawns were just shooting the bugs.

    After the carnage, my animals were still standing and not even close from getting downed (death in 21 hours and no immediate danger) as the turret was getting most of the attention. My pawn was able to repair the turret faster than the swarm could damage it. I even got so absent-minded confident near the end that I let him wander off to another task rather than constantly having him go back repairing, while the rest were mopping up the last remaining insects.

    This is the state of my rapidly-expanding freezer right now, kibble for days, and I'm about to send a caravan out to sell the 1100+ units of jelly to hopefully get some useful gear in return so I don't get obliterated by this wealth spike.

    A neutral faction called a bunch of factions together for a trade expo. They slaughtered the caravans, I stole 700 silver from the dead traders and left again.
