Typical Tuesday Tutorial Thread -- March 03, 2020

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 12:14 AM PST

Please use this thread as a week-to-week space to ask your fellow /r/RimWorld colonists for assistance. Whether it be colony planning, help with mods, or general guidance, post any questions you may have here! If you have an effort post about a game mechanic then this is also fine space for that but please consider making a separate subreddit post for maximum visibility. I am a bot, so I can't make jokes. If you'd like a Typical Tuesday joke, or if there are any problems with this post, please message the moderators of the subreddit.

God damn does this game have it's moments

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 09:05 PM PST

Just bought the dlc and decided to start on randy random merciless and commitment mode.

Crashland on a planet, naked (just how I like it, hardcore), build a base and after a week I believe I'm in a good enough position to start doing some research and build defenses. All was going according to plan until you meet Matt. Matt was a random wanderer estranged from his family because this dude probably tried to fuck his cousin. Matt was such a horn dog that within 3 days of meeting his caretaker and teammate, Samantha, he decided to take a shot at literally the only other sentient life form. Samantha wasn't having any of it, but Matt didn't take no for an answer. He continued to pester her continually for sex. Day after day his luck never changed. Samantha was never going to let Matt touch her and that drove him crazy. So crazy that Matt decided that the only possible recourse was to eat. all. of. my. food. I mean all of it. I had 15 meals and that is exactly how many Matt ate that fateful day. There was no stopping him. You can tell him he isn't allowed to eat the meals, but Matt didn't care. Matt see food, matt eat food. So I waited until Matt left the house and proceeded to lock him out. Matt broke in. Matt ate more food. My only option left to stop this Foodzilla from destroying my run was to arrest him. I tied Matt to a bed pondering what to do with this disgusting pig of a human. My hand hovered over the execute button. Matt had no idea what was about to occur to him. He should have seen it coming but the only thing Matt ever saw was his fucking horse meat and berry soup. Samantha unsheethed her knife and uttered the last words Matt would ever hear, "eat this you fucking pig" as she slit his throat, ending the life of Matt, the most useless piece of shit the rimworld has ever seen. Goodbye Matt, No one will ever miss you.

Me peaceful rice farmer. Why world so cruel?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 07:08 AM PST

    -Me and children make rice

    -big harvest, fills storage room

-word spreads about my famous rice

    -raiders come visit

-rice will spoil soon, I make rice offering

    -raiders ignore all my rice

    -raiders kill me and children

    -raiders leave empty handed

    -why world so cruel?

All I want is the option to pacify raids by offering items equivalent to a set value.

Like 50% of all my stored rice when literally all I have is rice (I assume that's why the raiders came to visit).

Version 1.2 Balance & Suggestions thread

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 08:26 AM PST

From this blog post we can see that Tynan is not done with Rimworld which is fantastic news! I thought it would be worthwhile starting a discussion about our experiences with the DLC so far, where there are gaps and where things don't seem quite right. I also know that Tynan regularly looks at this subreddit because he keeps responding to my messages! (what a guy).

    New Content:

    • This post made me think that royal furniture is something that's needed in the expansion. The vanilla expanded mods are pretty amazing already but parts of them do conflict with vanilla balance and they're less able to be implemented in the Royalty DLC quests/challenges. Having a noble demanding a fancy dining room for example would be quite fun!
    • There are already mods that add shuttles and horse riding but with the new shuttle and horses added to the game it would be great to see this added to vanilla behaviour. There are many vehicle types that would suit the base game.
    • Ranged equivalents to the Zeushammer, Plasmasword, and Monosword.
    • Vanilla mechanics to house prisoners better. Bedrooms, dining rooms, rec rooms that they can freely pass in. Now that we have quests to house large numbers of prisoners it would be useful to keep them happier.

    Balance suggestions:

    • There's been a lot of discussion about Nobles changing their personality too quickly and I agree. One option for this would be to ramp it up over the course of x number of days. So on day 1 you get a notification that colonist is now a Knight and will want a throne room and a decent bedroom and will stop doing certain work but you get a week or a quadrum or so before it happens. Over time the colonist gets more moody about not having his requirements met.
    • DLC quest balance seems a bit off. Some quests are far harder than others for their given reward. Some quests are made trivially easy if you have Crypyosleep containers. I have one quest to look after 9 Arctic wolves and they gave me 5 Flak armoured dudes to do it. No additional dangers but a decent reward. Its trivially easy - only food is a problem but then I have 5 new workers for that. But then on some quests you get the opposite problem and your map is littered with Mechanoid Clusters and half your colony is recovering in the infirmary for barely any reward. It would be nice also if you could optionally keep the additional help for a couple of days after a quest is finished to help clear the map of the dangers instead of them immediately leaving when they shuttle is sent.
    • Some of the vanilla mechanics could be reworked to make more sense with DLC. For example, the Greedy personality trait could be a sliding scale comparison between the colonist's rank and the highest rank in your colony. So if they're a commoner and you have a Count they will be very displeased but if they're a Knight they won't mind quite so much.
    • I think some of the insulation mechanics are a bit off - especially related to hot weather gear. I think being naked (or near naked) should provide better defence against the heat and thick clothing should provide negative insulation against heat. People wearing Jackets or thick Parkas in 40 degree heat but being ok because they have a devilstrand cowboy hat on is a little immersion breaking.
    • The research requirements for Recon-Marine-Cataphract armour seem a bit much. They're already incredibly expensive to manufacture so needing 18000 research points seems a bit much. I think they could potentially be grouped together or maybe a scaling 3000-4500-6000 or similar would be enough. Also for helmets I'm not sure why you'd ever build the cheaper ones. The only difference is plasteel which isn't too bad to get. Maybe Cataphract should be 2 Advanced components or Recon should be just ordinary components or maybe each should get in game bonuses (accuracy / melee hit chance / etc) to give each one more utility so that each can have a purpose (similar to how the main armours have different move speed penalties).

No tl;dr but tried to highlight the important points of each paragraph. Anyway I'm sure there are a million good ideas from you guys so feel free to suggest some of your own.

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 08:16 PM PST

Erika was the erstwhile "noble" of our town. She often preached from her pulpit and psychically smashed her enemies.

Until drop-pods ruined her throne-room and bedroom. With a 30ish malus from not being pampered, she broke down in the middle of the battle for her fiefdom. As she wandered in a daze, all her serfs, soldiers, and servants lay dying.

A raider merely walked up behind her and brained her.

And that was the end. Thanks Erika.
