How my colony went from thriving to completely wiped out in the span of a couple of seconds.

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 07:44 AM PDT

Strap yourself in, it's story time.

It was a colony of around 14 colonists. They were doing well. Cait had a bunch of psypowers, full cataphract armor and a link monosword. Nothing could best her in melee combat. All of her opponents would usually lose an arm or a leg before being finished off in the next strike.

Everyone else had bullpup rifles and full recon armor, except for Paisley, who refused to wear a recon helmet and instead opted for a hyperweave tuque and ballistic goggles. They were preparing for the royal ascent, and were making components, advanced components, armor, you name it. They were also making animal bionics for Julie's thrumbo, Emerald. Emerald had been part of the colony for years thanks to a lucky bond between him and Julie early on, and the two were inseparable. He's been of immense help during raids, and the colony finally had enough resources and crafters, so it was time for him to get decked out with bionics. He deserves it. He already had a bionic spine, heart and legs. Paul had just finished crafting Emerald's bionic jaw. Rubber was spinning cloth right next to Paul, and they were chitchatting about this and that. It was all coming together nicely.

Rubber was a pyromaniac, and he was recruited just a year or two prior. He was recruited for his crafting skills, and his pyromania could be managed. So they thought, anyway.

The decision to keep Rubber would very soon prove to be the decision that would ultimately result in the downfall of the entire colony.

Rubber was in the middle of spinning cloth when he had a mental break. Being the pyromaniac he was, he naturally went on a fire-starting spree. This was thought to be no big deal, until he set his first item ablaze:

    A stack of 1500 chemfuel.

It was right in the workshop, and it was only 3-4 cells away from him. Paul had no time to react and the others were too far away. The chemfuel catches fire, and soon after, it explodes.

The entire workshop is in flames. Paul is stuck in the corner opposite of the door, with 10-20 tiles of fire between him and safety. The temperature of the room quickly reaches 1000C. Paul is desperately fighting the fire, while suffering burns both from the super-heated air and the fire itself. The others come to help. Van and Paisley were the first to arrive, and immediately start putting out the fires from the door, with all the other colonists in tow.

Paul collapses from heatstroke. Rubber had already made it out of the workshop, and was wandering around the colony, setting fire to other things as the others tried to save the workshop. It seems to be going well for them; slowly but surely, the fires start disappearing, and the colonists make their way further into the room to put out the remaining fires. Paisley rushes to save the components, and she too, collapses from heatstroke. Van collapses right after her. The fires are being extinguished, but the temperature of the room is still at a steady 1000C. Emerald rushes to the workshop with 300 chemfuel in order to fill up the now-empty stockpile. It was a kind thought, but now was not the time. Julie makes her way straight to Paul, who was barely conscious. She picks him up and tries to get him to a hospital bed, away from the chaos. But it was too late. Paul's heatstroke and burns were already bad, and he died in Julie's arms as he was being carried out.

Paisley, Tiny and Van were incapacitated on the ground. Julie, Cait and Andy were still trying to fight the fires, but they soon collapsed from heatstroke, just like the others. Other colonists soon took their places in beating out the fires.

Cait died, and Andy too. Julie was holding on by a thread, but could not be saved quickly enough, and also succumbed to her injuries. As soon as she died, Emerald - who was in the barn - went berserk. One by one, the animals started dying. The boars, as well as the wargs. Emerald even went after the colony's pet ram. No one was safe.

Except for Happy, of course, who was happily taking care of the colony's cocoa plants in the greenhouse. At this point, Rubber had stopped setting things on fire and was fast asleep in his bedroom; either blissfully unaware of the chaos that was unfolding around him, or willfully ignorant of it. Everyone except Rubber and Happy were dead and burnt to ashes. Happy was safe, but not for long. As he was finishing up the cocoa harvest, Emerald ran straight into the greenhouse and started attacking him. Happy managed to land a few hits, but collapsed soon after. Rubber was minding his own business and was relaxing in his bedroom. After Emerald was done with Happy, he wandered around the colony's residential area and waited for Rubber, who was now the only living colonist. At this point, one of the rooms was burning, and the fire spread through the door and out into the corridor. Rubber came out of his room, and was immediately jumped by Emerald. Rubber was standing close to the burning room, and as they were fighting, he caught fire.

Rubber panicked, and started running around. The fire grew bigger and bigger, and was soon enveloping him entirely. He collapsed, inside his bedroom. Continuing to burn, he soon met his end. Killed by the very fire he had started, after he had seen it take the lives of everyone he knew around him.

Still mourning the loss of his master, Emerald continued to tear through the remainder of the colony, searching for anything and anyone to attack.

But even he was not invulnerable, and eventually succumbed to his numerous wounds, right outside the bedroom of his deceased master.

TLDR; don't have pyros and have firepoppers near any chemfuel stockpiles. if you have to have a pyro, make sure he doesn't get to have legs.
