    Vote/nominate for /r/RimWorld's 'best of 2019'

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 11:30 AM PST

    Happy holidays, colonists!

Just like last year, /r/RimWorld will be participating in reddit's annual 'Best of' awards. Every year, the site admins gift reddit coins to subreddits who, in turn, award them to winners of various categories. The winners are nominated and voted on by the subreddit's users.

The RimWorld moderators have put together the following 5 categories. As we are still not omniscient beings, we've also included a 6th 'Choose-your-own' category. Unlike last year, we have more reddit coins to play around with so the prizes this year are a bit more intense.

    Prizes

    • Category winners receive 3 months of reddit premium and a special subreddit flair
    • The user who nominates a category winner will also receive 1 month of reddit premium - Last year /u/Rockachaws won 3 months of reddit premium by simple virtue of having the only nominee in a category!
    • The user with the second most votes in a category will receive 1 month of reddit premium

    Categories

    • Most OG OP
    • Most impressive colony
    • Best feature analysis
    • Best effort post
    • Artist of the year
    • Make your own category

    Contest rules

    • Users may not nominate themselves
    • Nominees must be members of good standing on /r/RimWorld and reddit (not banned or suspended)
    • Users may only make one nomination per category
    • Nominations must be in the format provided as a reply to top level comments
    • Discussion of nominees is welcome but subreddit/site rules still apply
    • Breaking any of the above rules will result in the comment(s)/nomination(s) being removed from the thread.

For fairness, this thread will have contest mode enabled. That means the comment sort will be randomized, scores will be hidden, and replies will be collapsed.

Voting will take place through January 15th. Awards and results will be posted in mid January.

Man this game is something else.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 08:31 PM PST

This game is amazing. I have about 250 hours in this game with about 7hrs in my current run. Everything was going pretty okay, if not kinda of boring, for awhile so I was just building up my base a little bit. When the bulk trader came through and I was selling him all my drugs I noticed he had a female monkey for sale and I hatched an idea. I bought the monkey and planned on (in)breeding with my current companion monkey "Allen" for a fun Planet of the Apes type surprise for the next raid that comes my way. After a few in game days the female monkey becomes pregnant and everything is going to plan until one poor timed "zzzttt". My power grid exploded but thankfully I'm in a mountain base and have next to no flammables. After surveying the damage the only thing I lost was a marble wall and a dresser; but next to the dresser Female Monkey is incapacitated and needs to be saved. I send my best doctor to help her right away. She's badly burned, lost an eye, and has a cracked leg but thankfully it looks like she'll make it. The only problem is the explosion gave her a concussive induced abortion and I lost the pregnancy, but I'll be damned if I was giving up on her so I patched her up and waited. Once the burns started healing she unfortunately developed an infection that I couldn't treat fast enough and I had to make the call; it was time to amputate. The surgery was a success and she is sitting in her handlers room now recovering from the burns and amputation. Now the only thing left to do is actually name her.

TL;DR - Boring start, bought a monkey to bred into an elite fighting force until an explosion caused an abortion and an infection ultimately made me amputate a monkey's arm all before I could even name them.

If You Were a Colonist, What Would Your Character Sheet Look Like?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 02:54 AM PST

This question randomly came to mind as I sat down to play this morning (yes it's Monday morning and I'm playing Rimworld– last day of vacation!) I looked at the character sheet in-game, used the tooltips to guide me through the process and even made up some of my own traits! What does yours look like?

    Name: Danny

    Age: 33

    Backstory:

    Ballroom Dancer

    • Danny was trained as a competitive dancer in his youth. He won many competitions with his team, but never found his own success. He relished the opportunity to fully apply himself to something, though his career was not without its challenges, both physical and emotional.

    Music Teacher

    • Danny took his dance training and applied it to the drum kit, eventually becoming skilled enough to perform internationally and then share his experience with others. In the end, he became more interested in teaching than in playing, even going so far as to study the mind itself to further his understanding.

    Traits:

    Unobligated

    • Danny hates demands being placed upon him, and will often avoid committing to things. (Social -2)

    Nonchalant

    • Danny is quite content to watch life play out without his influence. He doesn't tend to concern himself with things, and so doesn't tend to act on them unless necessary. (Work Speed -10%; Mood +2)

    Mindful

    • Danny loves to practice mindfulness, which improves his cognition and mood, but costs him time. (Mood +4; Intellectual +2; Work Speed -15%)

    Deep Thinker

    • Danny tends to think things through to the point of philosophising. Great for long conversations, not so great for getting things done. (Mood -2; Work Speed -5%; Intellectual +2)

    Health:

    No conditions, injuries or implants

    Skills:

    Shooting- 0

    Melee- 3

    Construction- 1

    Mining- 0

    Cooking- 3

    Plants- 1

    Animals- 1

    Crafting- 1

    Artistic*- 17

    Medical- 1

    Social*- 13

    Intellectual**- 11
