I just want to thank the developers Posted: 02 Dec 2020 12:52 AM PST Hello, I just want to say thank you Ludeon Studios for blessing us with such an amazing game. I only have about 410 hours on the game, but I got so much enjoyment out of it. It's nice to know that there is something that allows me to take off my mind the current situation I am in right now. Decided to draw my favorite colonist that's been hard carrying my current colony. Luka! Posted: 01 Dec 2020 10:36 PM PST Oh boy, this has been one of my most fun runs yet. I started with the intent of exploring the Save our Ship 2 mod and ship was planned to be launched the ship within a few quadrums. UNTIL ONE OF MY COLONISTS decided to have a mental break and proceeded to smack a stack of chemfuel lighting the store house on fire and everything in it. One thing led to another and my colonists met up with Luka a Revia, who proceeded to turn what was suppose to be a scientific exploration team, into a band of bloodthirsty tribal weebs hopped up on drugs. After 5 years this band of tribals became a empire of bloodthirsty Spacer weebs hopped up drugs and cybernetics and cybernetic drugs. And they still haven't built a single ship part yet. [link] [comments] |

Sun lamps are >366% efficient. Posted: 01 Dec 2020 03:28 PM PST Consider a sun lamp powered by solar panels. Each solar panel takes up 16 tiles and produces 1700W with 100% illumination. Thus the solar output in Rimworld is at least 106.25W per tile. The sun lamp provides 100% illumination for 100 tiles, so it's output is at least 10.6kW, yet it only requires 2.9kW. This means that the sun lamp has an efficiency of at least 366%! Some efficiency can be gained by converting the wavelengths that plants can't use into the blues and reds that they can. Plant pigments (chlorophylls and carotenoids) absorb light from approximately 400~525nm, as well as 650~700nm. Modern solar panels absorb light from about 400~1100nm. The peak energetic intensity from sunlight is in the lower 400-800nm range, trailing off into the IR range up to 2400nm, modern solar panels convert energy fairly evenly across their functional range (i.e. they are less efficient in the most energetic wavelengths). For the sake of argument, though, lets say that the energetic distribution of sunlight and solar panel efficiency are both uniform. Thus, there is a very optimistic maximum efficiency gain of (1100-400)/(525-400+700-650)=400% So, assuming the solar panels and sun lamp are both 100% efficient, the sun lamp's efficiency makes sense. However, when you consider that the theoretical maximum efficiency of a solar panel is around 33%, and that there is less energy in the infrared spectrum to be harvested and converted into the visible spectrum, the sun lamp should actually require a lot more power. Of course the power usage & production in the game is just made up for game balance, but this excellent efficiency could explain why plant factories are so much more viable in Rimworld than in reality.
