I'm not a good player, but I'm persistent!

Finally, after more than 2k hours spent in this game, I managed to launch a ship. Here's the colony just before starting the power up. This event made me decide, after months and months of mere lurking, to post here.

Now I'm starting a new Randy playthrough, committment mode. This time, I want to build a multi-building "city" rather than the usual monobuilding colonies I've done so many times. Thing is, even with this number of hours put into the game I'm still not sure on how to protect and grant security until on late development.

I've got commerce and production right now, but combat and security is still a big issue for me. So I would like to ask anyone who has experience in defending a multi-building "city" to share their tips :)

wanted to see what would happen the ammo storage went nuclear, needless to say the game doesn't like 10K+ warheads going off at once

Protip: Never have caravans attack in the evening

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 01:07 PM PST

If you've sent a caravan on a quest that involves attacking someplace, like a bandit camp or item stash, keep an eye on what time they will arrive. If it's going to be late in the day, wait until they are .1 or .2 days out, and hit the "Rest" button. Let them rest overnbight, and in the morning let them continue.

If you attack late in the day, you will often find that by the time the battle is over, your pawns are tired and only interested in immediately resting. Now, if you won the fight with no major injuries so you're ready to move on immediately, this is no problem and you can just reform the caravan.

But if you've got downed pawns, or even ones that are still up, but moving at significantly reduced speed, you'll probably need to stay so they can heal up for a day or two. And if they're tired from a late fight, they'll just fall asleep on the ground, rather than tending to wounded or setting up a shelter and bedrolls so they can have a comfortable night and be in a good mood in the morning. Spending the night in pain, on the ground, outdoors, and in the cold/heat can put them in a pretty bad mood by morning.

If you rest overnight and attack first thing in the morning, you'll have plenty of time to win the fight, tend your wounded, and decide if you need to stick around so wounded can recover a day or two. If you need to, you'll have time to cut down some trees, build a shelter, install bedrolls, build a table and chairs, make a horseshoe stake, harvest some berries, hunt some animals, build a campfire, and cook some meals. All before bedtime.

    My first perma death tragedy.

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 10:25 PM PST

Minoru fighting to continue on the day after his son and wife died. Shades was shot in the head during a firefight in a narrow corridor. His battle buddy Leach was incapacitated while trying to fallback. Leach was later captured but died during travel. Adding insult to injury the colonists had to endure a toxic fallout afterwards. They were not even able to retrieve Shades' body.

The raid came from three sides. Two raiders from the north equip with bolt action rifles, two raiders from the west with a bolt action rifle and a knife and two raiders from the south equip with a bolt action rifle and a revolver. Shades and Leach were sent to defend against the southern group. They made their stand in a narrow corridor which is where they met their demise. Kenny was sent just north west of their position to flank the two raiders coming from the west.

This is where Shades and Leach fought in their final moments. Shades was an invaluable asset to the colony. The recovery from his loss is going to take a long time.

When Shades' position fell it was up to Kenny. The remaining combatants were now Kenny and the remaining two groups of raiders. Kenny ran to Shades' body to equip his pulse rifle and slowly began to flank the group from the west. He emerged victorious but day 171 will be etched into their minds forever.

    R.I.P. Shades and Leach
