Typical Tuesday Tutorial Thread -- September 22, 2020

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 01:14 AM PDT

Please use this thread as a week-to-week space to ask your fellow /r/RimWorld colonists for assistance. Whether it be colony planning, help with mods, or general guidance, post any questions you may have here! If you have an effort post about a game mechanic then this is also fine space for that but please consider making a separate subreddit post for maximum visibility. I am a bot, so I can't make jokes. If you'd like a Typical Tuesday joke, or if there are any problems with this post, please message the moderators of the subreddit.

    Daily Mood

Man in black? I prefer the man in white.

For some reason, this image immediately reminded me of my colony.

    The Royal Ascent finish.

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 06:32 AM PDT

I just finished the game for the first time escorted off world by the Royal Ascent quest. Seeing those 'in memory of' names at the end made me sad. I was like 'oh yeah she was funny' and 'I felt bad for that guy cos no-one liked him'. 2 couples got married including 2 that clawed their way up to Royalty.

This game lasted 5 months. I suspect the next one will too.

    Here's to a new colony!! :)

I am a little bit shocked when I saw this creepy portrait in random settle location while I butcher some meat for travel supply

TIL Psylink neuroformers can still be received as quest rewards, if rarely.

It would be cool to add a random event where your map is the distant place of someone else's skip shield

Unpopular opinion: Melee skill is stupidly underpowered.

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 01:31 PM PDT

This is the first playthrough that I have considered using melee pawns, and I feel they extremely weak/fragile. Only bumrushing the enemy with 2+ pawns with whatever weapons work. What's stupid is the fact that a 18 melee pawn can lose a 1:1 fight with 3 melee pawn. Same loadout, same traits. To be honest, that's just frustrating. When I imagine 18 melee, passionate, experienced brawler pawn, I see a fucking gladiator. 3melee pawn is your average Joe Shmoe who trained judo for 3 months in high school. I'm not saying high lvl melee pawns should be super sayians killing troves of enemies on their own, I just think melee should have way more significance in 1:1 duels. Anyways, thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Edit: I guess I sparked a really good discussion and thank you guys. Some of you mention turbo OP endgame colonists, which is not my point entirely. My point is early game imbalance in regards to the skill only. Level 18 is, according to the description "Planet known master" and level 3 is "some familiarity". You wont tell me a fucking navy seal with 25 years of training is in any danger in a 1v1 with a fresh recruit. Even if they both have only knives and wear leather jackets. Thats my point.

Are there any mods that add trains?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 08:08 AM PDT

I thought I'd ask, it would be cool if you could build tracks and a train would roll in to do trade or unload bandits or something.

    Smoothed surfaces count as wealth

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 08:22 AM PDT

    I need to vent.

One of the major problems I have with this game is that smoothed walls/floors count as wealth. I just lost yet another game where my tribal pawns who didn't even have stonecutting yet and only had recurve bows and a stone club were attacked by 4 mechs - they all died so I reloaded a save point. Then a month later after I added a 4th pawn armed with a poor knife, pirates attack using guns (again all died). After several more times scum-loading after dying from diseases, starving (blight) and toxic fallout (no food due to no refrigeration), and toxic spewers I cant kill with a club, I finally gave up when a siege with mortars and 14 pirates armed with automatic weapons set up shop in my map while my 6 pawns were armed with bows, spears and an awful pistol. I didn't even have electricity yet. All my wealth was just smoothed rooms, some steel/blocks, basic furniture and a small amount of cloth.

Settings were Randy Strive-to-Survive...the middle difficulty.

The game appears to decide that if you smooth the walls and floor you are "wealthy" even if you don't have refrigeration and live precariously from rice harvest to rice harvest. The graph shows my "buildings' wealth as a big ramp up even though I have nothing but a few rooms inside a mountain that are smoothed...and the minimum of wood/steel furnishings. I understand carpet or fancy stone tiling counting as wealth because it costs something to make. Smoothing just costs you time.

Why do I take the time to smooth? I play with stock characters who often have default mood debuffs (like tortured artist), so I have to try and reduce the mood debuffs I can control like "awful bedroom" in order to prevent non-stop mental breaks.
