My dads been playing too much Rimworld...

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 02:40 PM PST

Today, some old people where crossing the street (illegally) in front of us. My dad (who's getting old himself, says to me: "great idea, cross my path and go as slow as you can. That'll end well. They should have been turned to dust already. Ground up and fed to starving countries!" My dad makes dark jokes like this all the time. So I start thinking, "maybe my old man plays Rimworld." Wait till he goes to sleep (at his house for thanksgiving,) and I sneak on his computer. Thankfully, he left his steam logged in. I check his apps, and Rimworld is open, just minimized. Open it up, and he has a colony of 100+ people, a mod list four times the size of mine, and double my hours. Oh, and a room full of partially eaten bodies on the half of his colony that contains all the cannibal and physcopath rooms.

A critique of mechanics; why I hate researching.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 02:58 PM PST

I've been playing since A3 and had always seen the current mechanics behind research as more of a placeholder into something greater as what we currently have feels incredibly lack luster and very hands off.

Now I would be okay with this in a game like Dawrf Fortress or any another similar game with a focus on automation; Rimworld however has a pretty clear focus on individuality and the colonists as a whole.

With content like the mood update and the story update, we began seeing such a huge focus on building a colony made of personalities instead of a colony made of ants. This here is why I believe Rimworld stands out from similar games in the genre as it's own thing as such a focus leaves players investing more into the individual personalities of each colonist, drawing a contrast to things like Dwarf Fortress where you care more about the settlement/colony as more of an entity rather than the individuals that make it up (but don't get me wrong, DF can have some seriously outrageous scenarios that can define individuals amongst others.)

This focus on individualism in Rimworld creates an investment into these colonists, an investment that is immediately disregarded the moment you designate that one unfortunate colonist to baby sit the research table for 95% of the game.

Yeah, it's kind of disappointing how researching works. You have a colonosist stand there for days on end, researching everything possible through a linear system of which only increases in speed and never in complexity or involvement. You just have one guy standing there from morning till night staring at a table while everyone else is out performing more complex tasks and while it can be argue that research as whole helps the colony grow through tech that allows for better adaptation, the action of it is very hands off from your colony and remains as a part of the game I have always found to be too uninvolved to be any amount of fun.

It's a linear process that takes away a single colonists for the near entirety of a game and infact ends up taking away from the involvement of the player through sheer linearity. Such a simple system always struck me as a "to overhaul later" for Tynan, possibly through mechanics of variance and chance by combing materials and such, maybe by doing way away with research as a whole or allowing research to live on as a skill that increases chance for discovering new tech when that colonist happens to be working an profession or so.

Whatever the case, this is what we have now. I'm curious to hear others opinions on research and even more so if mods exist to overhaul research as a whole. This was intended to be more of a criticism than a rant but take it as you will.
